Known at its origin in 1965 as the Sheridan Park Research Community, the Sheridan Science and Technology Park remains to be one of the very few research communities in the world to be initiated and built entirely by industry. The 340 acre Park is devoted entirely to industrial research and development. The founding companies - Abitibi, AECL, Cominco Ltd., Dunlop Research Centre, Gulf Oil, Inco Limited, Mallory Batteries, the Ontario Research Foundation and Warner-Lambert - all became landowners in the 60ís and developed their laboratories and offices. Together, these companies incorporated the Sheridan Park Association to foster and attract additional research and development investment to the Park. These pioneer companies formalized excellence in science and technology and encouraged collaboration with new and existing member companies. An extremely wide range of applied research and product development takes place at Sheridan Park. Supporting research activities for industries from energy, electronics and nucleonics to chemicals, petroleum, pharmaceuticals to engineering and movie-making, over 2,700 scientists, technicians, engineers and support staff are employed within the Parkís boundaries. The Sheridan Science and Technology Park is located 28 kilometres from the University of Toronto's main campus, 5 kilometres from its Mississauga campus and 39 kilometres from McMaster University. Many of its unique buildings can be seen looking north from the Queen Elizabeth Way, between the Winston Churchill and Erin Mills Parkway exits. Current resident members of the Association include AECL, CANCOM, Cominco Ltd., Hatch Associates, Imax Corporation, Inco Technical Services Limited, Ontario Development Corporation, ORTECH Corporation, Parke-Davis Research Institute, PCI Chemicals Canada Inc., Petro-Canada Lubricants R&D, Xerox Research Centre of Canada, and our newest member, Materials and Manufacturing Ontario.
